Toast is an album that stands on its own in my collection, unlike any other. The songs of Toast were so sad at the time that I couldn’t put it out. I just skipped it and went on to do another album in its place. That was 2001.	Toast es un álbum que destaca por sí solo en mi colección, por encima de cualquier otro. Las canciones de Toast eran tan tristes en su momento que no pude publicarlo. Me lo salté y pasé a hacer otro álbum en su lugar. Eso fue en 2001.
Crazy Horse and I recorded at ‘Toast’ studios in San Francisco. John Coltrane, one of my heroes, made some music there back in the day. The place had a vibe. It may have been called ‘Coast’ then, but maybe not. The name changed a few times back and forth. It was on Mission street in SF. The back door opened onto an alley. It was so stuffy in there that we left the door open until one day we saw rats coming in and out. After that, we just went outside for a smoke.	Crazy Horse y yo grabamos en los estudios 'Toast' de San Francisco. John Coltrane, uno de mis héroes, grabó allí en su día. El lugar ofrecía un buen ambiente. Puede que entonces se llamara 'Coast', pero quizá no. El nombre cambió varias veces. Estaba en la calle Mission en San Franciso. La puerta trasera daba a un callejón. Era tan sofocante que dejábamos la puerta abierta hasta que un día vimos que entraban y salían ratas. Después de eso, salimos a fumar.
The music of Toast is about a relationship. There is a time in many relationships that go bad, a time long before the break up, where it dawns on one of the people, maybe both, that it’s over. This was that time.	La música de Toast trata de una relación. The sound is murky and dark, but not in a bad way. Fat. From the first notes of Toast, I can feel the sadness that permeates the recording. One song, with its refrain, ”Don’t say you love me”, is called ‘Quit’. The next one, sort of like a Deep Purple hit, is called ‘Standing in the Light of Love'. “I don’t wanna get personal, or have you put me on the spot” is the opening line. Then came ‘Goin Home’. A lady is lost in her car. The dark city surrounds her - past present and future. It’s a scary place. You be the judge.	El sonido es turbio y oscuro, pero no en el mal sentido. Denso. Desde las primeras notas de Toast, puedo sentir la tristeza que impregna la grabación. Una canción, con su estribillo "No digas que me quieres", se llama Quit. La siguiente, una especie de éxito de Deep Purple, se llama Standing in the Light of Love. "No quiero que sea algo personal, ni que me pongas en un aprieto" es la frase inicial. Now the scene changes to a religious guy who just lost his job. He’s turning on Jesus. He can’t cut any more trees. He’s a logger. Finally, The ‘Gateway of Love’ beckons with “background noise on a changing sky”.	Ahora la escena cambia a un tipo creyente que acaba de perder su trabajo. Se vuelve contra Jesús. No puede cortar más árboles. Es un leñador. Al final, Gateway of Love le llama con "ruido de fondo en un cielo cambiante".
I had forgotten about these songs, put them out of my mind and went on living my life.	Me había olvidado de estas canciones, las aparté de mi mente y seguí viviendo mi vida.
It must be said that here Crazy Horse shows a depth never seen or heard before on any other Horse recording. For the greatest group I have ever met - CRAZY HORSE, this is a pinnacle. Where they let me go, where they took me, was unbelievable. I couldn’t stay.	He de decir que aquí Crazy Horse muestra una profundidad nunca vista ni escuchada antes en ninguna otra grabación de Horse. Para el grupo más grande que he conocido, CRAZY HORSE, esto es un hito. Next, “I’d like to shake your hand, Mr. Disappointment.” I see you now eye to eye. Murky and dark. There’s no mistaking it. How can you be so real and intangible?
