DIRECTAMENTE DESDE EL FONDO DEL MALETERO: 10 años del estreno de Trunk Show

"My God, I don't know what to say." 

Esas fueron las primeras palabras de Neil cuando Jonathan Demme le mostró el montaje final de 
Trunk Show: Scenes from a concert

Este film, de cuya presentación en salas de cine se cumplirá este año su décimo aniversario, supone la segunda de las colaboraciónes entre su aclamado director y también rustie confeso, con el músico canadiense. 

Tan sólo un año después del estreno de la primera de esas colaboraciones, el también fantástico documental Heart of Gold, Neil decide volver a trabajar con Demme y le encarga la filmación de un par de shows de la gira en la que se encuentra inmerso por aquel entonces. 

Está terminando el año 2007 y Young se está empleando a fondo en el tramo final de su Chrome Dreams Continental Tour por territorio americano. 

Durante esta gira Neil despliega shows muy intimistas por grandes y clásicos teatros de la geografía estadounidense, el formato de los mismos es el ya recurrente, constituido por un set acústico para posteriormente culminar los conciertos con un segundo set ya en eléctrico. 

En esta ocasión la formación elegida por Young para salir a la carretera sería la llamada The Chrome Dreams Band, que contaba con:

Todo el tour es una delicia, y Neil para la ocasión decide filmarlo en su momento álgido, casi al final del mismo, cuando la banda y él se encuentran en perfecto estado de forma y engrasados. El templo elegido para tales fastos es un teatro con capacidad para casi dos mil afortunados asistentes, y que es a la postre uno de los locales fetiche para el canadiense en el cual siempre nos deja grandes actuaciones, se trata del coloquialmente llamado Philly, el Tower Theater de Upper Darby, en Philadelphia.

El Philly fue la penúltima de las escalas de aquella gira, culminada con seis noches seguidas en Nueva York. En Philadelphia Neil ofrecería dos shows, los cuales pasarán a la historia como los inmortalizados en el film que nos ocupa. 

El repertorio manejado por Young durante el Chrome Dreams Continental Tour fue intenso, increíble y sobre todo en buena parte inedito. 

El canadiense abrió el maletero (Trunk en inglés de los USA) y de su fondo estrajo muchas canciones ya olvidadas, otras tantas jamás publicadas, incluso algunas que nunca había tocado sobre un escenario.

Durante esta gira el público pudo disfrutar de gemas que se prodigan poco sobre las tablas como, las geniales outtakes del álbum Harvest, Bad fog of loneliness y Love in mind, esta última no era interpretada desde el Time Fades Away Tour; así como un Oh Lonesome Me y un Winterlong directamente llegados del ya lejano 1969 y concebidos inicialmente para formar parte de aquel segundo álbum con los Crazy Horse originales que jamás se publicó. En el caso de la versión de Don Gibson, era la segunda ocasión en casi cuatro décadas que Neil la interpretaba sobre un escenario.

Oh Lonesome Me - Trunk Show

A ellos hay que sumar más tesoros como Sad Movies y Love Art Blues, ineditas canciones ya casi olvidadas del prolífico año 1974, y que el canadiense no tocaba desde entonces, cuando las estrenó durante el mastondontico CSNY Tour de aquel año.
Tampoco resultaba habitual hasta la fecha escuchar en directo la interpretación de composiciones de 1976 no publicadas en aquel momento como No one seems to know o Campaigner, las cuales también fueron repescadas para este Tour 2007.
Pero si este material ya resulta de por si exclusivo y atractivo a partes iguales, quedo eclipsado aunque parezca increíble por una serie de temas que, Neil sacó directamente de la máquina del tiempo de su maletero para hacerlos debutar en vivo ante el publico presente. Se trata nada menos que de Try, Kansas y México, tres canciones que datan del periodo del inedito álbum Homegrown y que muy pocos oídos las habían escuchado hasta ese momento.

Y ya como guinda del pastel, se produce lo impensable durante esta gira, el debut en directo de la cara A del primer 45 rpm con los Squires, The Sultan,
Fue también la ocasión para el debut de varios temas nuevos incluidos en el álbum Chrome Dreams II recién editado, se trataba de No Hidden Path, The Believer, Spirit Road y Dirty Old Man.

Finalmente el montaje del film incluiría los siguientes cortes, extraídos de los dos shows ofrecidos en el Philly las noches del 9 y 10 de diciembre de 2007:

Desafortunadamente la película no ha sido aún comercializada en DVD, y Neil comentó el año pasado que en un futuro la subiría a los NYA, cosa que aún no ha sucedido. Aunque por lo visto ha sido emitida en una ocasión por la televisión canadiense, aquí más información al respecto. 

Como buen complemento a la película siempre es recomendable disfrutar de la escucha de algunos de los shows de este genial Chrome Dreams Continental Tour 2007.

El 2008 Continental Tour en imágenes

Me acabo de pillar un resumen del Tour que acaba de terminar en Estados Unidos, montado en un vídeo en formato ASF (para el reproductor Windows Media) en el que se recogen secuencias de imágenes fijas sobre el fondo de los directos de Neil Young.
Mientras escribo esto lo estoy viendo. Llevo ya algo más de 1 hora y 45 minutos de visionado y está apunto de terminar.
Por mi pantalla han pasado imágenes de los teatros en los que Neil actuó, entradas de cada uno de ellos, las portadas de los conciertos compartidos en Dime A Dozen, los instrumentos y otra cacharrería repartida por el escenario, la llegada de Neil y Pegi al teatro, los músicos que le acompañaron, fotos de Pegi, fotos de Neil correspondientes al set acústico y al set eléctrico, fotos de los saludos finales y la despedida, y al final, un corto vídeo de Eric Johnson, el autor de las pinturas que se exhiben en los conciertos y cuya venta sirve para recoger fondos para la Bridge School y un repaso a sus pinturas.
Y todo ello con la música de fondo de las canciones del Tour.

So who needs another Neil Young 2007 Tour Compilation? Well I do! There's always room for just one more!
I really enjoyed doing the upgrade/remaster for the Neil Young 1999 Tour compilation I posted elsewhere last year and felt the need to have another go

This compilation is different to that posted at http:// www.dimeadozen.org/ torrents - details.php?id = 175787 and the acoustic set is different from this one http:// www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=176048.
The same core songs of course but different selections.
I've compared each version of every song from all the recordings I have (most of them!) and picked the best version of each to my ears. There are only 3 song versions that appear on all 3 acoustic compilations where those three songs were performed only once and only 1 version (NHP) that appears on both electric comps.

Most of the acoustic songs I've selected are from Boston Dec 3 and Upper Darby Dec 9.
I've included both the piano and synth versions of A Man Needs A Maid Also included are two versions of Mellow My Mind, including the first night from Boise with the mouth harp intro.

I've put all the piano songs together onto Disc 2. A couple of years ago I compiled Piano Songs 2, so I've subtitled Disc 2 'Piano Songs 3'! albeit a rather short disc so I've also included from the BSB October 28th 'The Way' and though not a piano song, the acoustic band version of 'No Hidden Path'

Most of the electric songs are from Upper Darby Dec 10.
To my ears this show was the most clear and dynamic for the loud electric songs.

The only fades here are the long loud audience applause at the end of each track.
I've then used WavTrim to get songs on each set to play at the same volumes.
Then Goldwave to cross-fade the end of one track into the start of the next for each disc. No gaps.

Some commented on dime how the best acoustic set could be from one show yet the best electic set could be from another show. I certainly found this to be the case.

Many thanks to ron dironstarr for giving me the inspiration to have a go myself and to cherrman57 for making me work even harder to go the whole hog and not just another acoustic compilation.
I've followed Ron's idea of the 4cd set, 2 discs acoustic and 2 electric, rather than squeezing the whole set onto three discs.

Neil Young - 2007 Chrome Dreams Continental Tour Compilation

Y como no podía faltar la guinda del pastel, aquí tienes una formidable recopilación de los mejores momentos de la gira americana del Tío Neil.
Me consta que ha sido un trabajo duro el que ha hecho nuestro colega rustie Ron, que lo ha sometido a discusión en el foro y en el que se han vertido multitud de opiniones.
En estos momentos se está formando el tree de intercambio dentro de la Rust, pero ha tenido el detallazo de colocarlo en el Dime A Dozen para todo el que quiera.
Desde luego que en la playa... la próxima ola será en su honor.

2007 Chrome Dreams Continental Tour Compilation

A Compilation of the just completed USA Neil Young Tour. Only mastering done to tracks was to groupwave normalize them to -12db in Adobe Audtion. Fade in/out was also performed on each track. I broke it up into 4 discs to better reflect the set makeup of the shows. I also attempted to include at least one track from each venue on the tour. I've listened to it all together 3 times and am quite happy with how it sounds.

Thanks to all the tapers and uploaders! It truly was a great tour! Looking forward to hearing all you European Tapers work in 2008!

* The discs I received had the acoustic set + the electric set up until Winterlong/fade out on CD1. CD2 started with fade in/Oh, Lonesome Me. The track marks were a little off on some songs as well. So I corrected that and also removed some mic noises and loud shouts inbetween some songs before making flacs and uploading.

NOTES: Great show and sound......but the audience around me was 20 times louder than on 12/09. I had to lower the volume of the audience and raise the volume of the music quite a bit on the acoustic set. One part was so bad, i had to remove 10 seconds (after Kansas) I did the best i could not being a master with an audio editor. No parts of the music were processed (only in between songs) and the electric set has no edits at all. Enjoy!

Loud crowd so the acoustic set has been wave hammered to balance the applause & music...no problem on the electric side...which brings me to the tracking...Most nights averaged about 70-75 minutes of 2nd set...tonight's show was nearly 90 minutes! I moved The Loner to disc one and cross-faded and removed about 2minutes of encore applause and disc 2 still clocks in around 19:56. This was an amazing show! Neil and the band seemed to be having a great time. The show was being professionally recorded( multitrack truck outside) and video taped. This recording comes from the 7th row just left of dead center.

This is not the complete show!!
Hopefully in my defence: This was only my 3rd attempt ever to tape and I still have to get acquainted with the gear.
After the acoustic set I discovered that my device hadn't recorded anything at all.
So I switched it on again for the electric set only to discover at the end that
in the middle of Dirty Old Man it somehow got switched off again.
For the encore, I turned it on again and finally had no problems with that.

So until a full Wallingford recording surfaces, this is all I have:

Recieved this from a very reputable taper on Rust last night at the Wallingford show. He asked if I could pot it onto dime for him. I did not get the details from him about his equipment (not that I would understand it) but he was in the 3rd row, center. I did listen to disc 2 on the way home last night and was quite pleased.
