Archives Vol. 1 ¿por fin?

Bien.

http://neilyoungarchives.warnerbrosrecords.com/shop/vol1/

http://neilyoungarchives.warnerbrosrecords.com/shop/vol1/shop-individual-items.html

now to the simple to understand techie bits

1. video - BD will output what is known as full HD or 1920x1080 or 1080p. if you have a TV/monitor/projector capable of displaying this resolution, you are sorted. if not - you may not need to upgrade. have a read here - http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/. if you dont even have a digital TV you can still watch it but the quality will probably be poor. for the archives which will contain mostly stills you may be able to tolerate it. for movies, it is not worth getting BD unless you can pair it with a decent display unit

2. video connection - the only cable that can sustain the throughput required for 1080p is HDMI. you dont need an expensive cable. the cable does matter but as long as you get something decent you will be OK. what is decent? well... whatever the sales rep offers, refuse. avoid "monster" cables. they come with a "monster" price. less than $50 should be ample. if your TV has an HDMI input you should use HDMI. you will then need to decide whether you want to use it for video only or for audio as well, since it can do both. read the next few bullets about audio to make up your mind. if your TV does not have HDMI then use component (aka RGB - the red, green and blue cables), S-video or composite (the old red/yellow/white) in this order and based on what outputs your TV has. almost all BD players will have at least component output. however, you wont get the full resolution unless you use HDMI

3. audio - BD will output up to 24bit/192KHz. to benefit from this high fidelity (assuming your hearing was not destroyed by years of listening to neil and the horse) you will need an amplifier or a/v receiver which is capable of decoding and processing this signal. using HDMI to connect to your TV and using the TV speakers will work but will probably sound iffy. most BD players and most a/v receivers will have both optical and coax (basically an old style RCA cable) inputs/outputs. so from a connection/cable it is pretty simple. same rules apply to HDMI cable. dont get el cheapo and dont go overboard. moderation is key, just like your passion for neil (not including Karen here). from a codec/format point of view it is a mess. speakers are just dumb devices so the audio needs to be decoded before it reaches them. this can be done by the player (in which case the amp/receiver just sends the various channels to the speakers) or by the amp/receiver (in which case the player simply bitstreams the data out still encoded). there are 4 major codecs. most components will support the low end 2. the high end ones (Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA) are the problem. i dont know of a player that supports both and is in my price range. i dont know what codec the archives uses. so if you are happy with not being able to enjoy the full benefit (since all discs will have at least an audio track encoded using one of the low end ones) you are fine. if you want to cover all angles you need to make sure you can decode (either on player or amp) all codecs.

4. if you plan to use a PC, from what i know you wont be able to get the 24bit/192KHz.
