If liberty was a little girl Watching all the flags unfurl Standing at the big parade How would she like us now? We balance the power from hour to hour Giant guns raised It's such a long walk home it's such a long walk home It's such a long walk home From Vietnam to old Beirut If we are searching for the truth Why do we feel that double-edge blade Cutting through our hands? America, America Were have we gone? It's such a long walk home It's such a long walk home It's such a long walk home We balance the power from hour to hour Giant guns raised It's such a long walk home It's such a long walk home It's such a long walk home |
¿A qué extremos hemos llegado? Es el largo camino a casa. Es el largo camino a casa. Es el largo camino a casa. Equilibramos el poder de hora en hora. Armas de guerra en alto. Es el largo camino a casa. Es el largo camino a casa. Es el largo camino a casa. |

Last night I stood at your doorstep Trying to figure out what went wrong You just slipped somethin’ into my palm Then you were gone I could smell the same deep green of summer Above me the same night sky was glowin’ In the distance I could see the town where I was born It’s gonna be a long walk home Hey pretty Darling, don’t wait up for me Gonna be a long walk home A long walk home In town I passed Sal’s grocery The barbershop on South Street I looked into their faces They were all rank strangers to me The veterans’ hall high up on the hill Stood silent and alone The diner was shuttered and boarded With a sign that just said “gone” It’s gonna be a long walk home Hey pretty Darling, don’t wait up for me Gonna be a long walk home Hey pretty Darling, don’t wait up for me Gonna be a long walk home It’s gonna be a long walk home Here everybody has a neighbor Everybody has a friend Everybody has a reason to begin again My father said “Son, we’re lucky in this town It’s a beautiful place to be born It just wraps its arms around you Nobody crowds you, nobody goes it alone. You know that flag flying over the courthouse Means certain things are set in stone Who we are, what we’ll do and what we won’t.” Its gonna be a long walk home Hey pretty Darling, don’t wait up for me Gonna be a long walk home Hey pretty Darling, don’t wait up for me Gonna be a long walk home It’s gonna be a long walk home Its gonna be a long walk home Hey pretty Darling, don’t wait up for me Gonna be a long walk home Hey pretty Darling, don’t wait up for me Gonna be a long walk home It’s gonna be a long walk home It’s gonna be a long walk home |
Oye, cariño, no me esperes despierta. Oye, cariño, no me esperes despierta. Oye, cariño, no me esperes despierta. Oye, cariño, no me esperes despierta. Oye, cariño, no me esperes despierta. Oye, cariño, no me esperes despierta. Oye, cariño, no me esperes despierta. |

Our country and our way of life, that which our fathers and theirs fought for, is now threatened by our government. This is not what we voted for. This is our new reality. Our government is out of control, not standing for us. You can stand up for American values this summer, for our children and theirs.

When I tour the USA this summer, if there is not martial law by then which would make it impossible, let’s all come together and stand for American values. We will not be doing a political show. We will be playing the music we love for all of us to enjoy together. President Trump, you are invited. Come and hear our music just as you did for decades.

Bruce Springsteen and many others will be in our country this summer, there for you, playing your favorite music, songs like ‘Born in the USA’. We are proud to be who we are, and must never let our government forget it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR1-1-25 |
Feliz Año Nuevo1 de enero de 2025. |

Happy New Year dear readers! This is what’s been going on in the studio and my life for the last several months with Neil and his new band The Chrome Hearts.
Back in mid October I was on vacation in New Hampshire (where I’m from) and Maine, headed to my camp to meet up with my brothers in Down East Maine, which is in the middle of nowhere a mere half hours drive from the Canadian border by New Brunswick, one of the grand Maritime Provinces of our northern neighbor.
I had just checked out of my motel and having stocked up on provisions was on back country roads headed to the remote lake landing and boat dock to start my journey off the grid in all manner of communication with the outside world tethered only to a small motorboat. A mile or so from losing all cell reception the phone rings.
Neil is on the other end.
Neil está al otro lado.

“Hey John, How are you? Great, sounds like a blast. Hey, I want to record with the guys – at Shangri La Studios [in Malibu]. I got some new songs. This album is going to be real different.“
Tengo algunas canciones nuevas. Este álbum va a ser realmente diferente.
That alone is pause for concern for an engineer or at the very least, for some resolute thought because all his albums are different, as you never know what to expect. So when he says that, all bets are off. I only know that he plays guitar - electric and acoustic, and he plays the piano among a multitude of other instruments and he sings.
“When”, I asked.
¿Cuándo?, pregunté.
He answered without skipping a beat “Well, I was thinking next weekend or starting on Sunday. Oh, by the way, when are you back?”
And it was off to the races. Now, I’m three thousand miles away and I wasn’t due back for a week. He would wait but the clock had started ticking. Neil likes options so I gave him two, “Neil, either you’ll have to wait for me to return or get another engineer.” This was actually said with all sincerity because when he’s ready to record and create, it’s not a process that can be put off for very long if at all.
He was having his brother in law Lou Adler produce with him and me engineer and he had some songs. I asked no other questions because it’s pointless as often Neil doesn’t know how its going to unfold either, and why remind him.
Right then I decided to do it with him and Lou. The muse is what rules, period.
All of this conversation happened in the span of ten minutes or less while I had pulled over to the side of the road on the two lane blacktop so as not to lose reception, all in full view of a moose grazing in a bog to my right not far off.
I pulled into a gas station and made a series of calls to start the process of preproduction and hired our usual crew and spoke with the studio manager and assistants. A lot of moving parts were put into motion. While at the lake in my cabin I worked out the setup in my head and then wrote it all down. If you can set it up in your head before diagramming it and remember everything then you have a solid and failsafe plan to cover all eventualities.
Neil simply said to be ready for anything and only specified that he wanted to record all analog on a 16 track tape machine and wanted two ¼” tape machines for mixing and tape slap. No digital! Tape was ordered, outboard gear obtained, studio time booked. I made the final preplanning calls from the airports ahead of my long flights home.
As it was I got in very late on a Saturday night a week later and setup the control room and studio on Sunday. Fortunately all the crew had loaded in and had been setting up the Thursday before I got in. We were recording on Monday.
The Chrome Hearts are Corey McCormick on bass, Anthony LoGerfo on drums, Micah Nelson on guitar and Spooner Oldham on B3 Hammond organ. Neil played electric and acoustic guitar along with his Gold Rush upright piano and his pump organ. The PA was setup for putting the vocals into the room so everyone could work without headphones during tracking.
I record the entire band live, always. No one adds their own core musical parts later to build a track. It’s inhuman to expect any musician to stand there overdubbing to a pair of speakers or headphones while staring at an engineer. It is not fun and does not make for great art, at least not with Neil. That said, once we have a great track there are times he will add a part as an overdub but it is not the norm.
Monday the first day yielded four songs and on Tuesday he and the band got another three. Seven songs in two days! The studio setup took longer than that.
We spent a day or so editing the 2” tapes and rough mixing what we had.
Then I headed to Village Studios in West Los Angeles and started mixing the songs, again to ¼” tape with another ¼” tape machine for tape slap and delayed send to the EMT plate for echo. I never used any digital in the tracking or mixing process. ProTools was only used to create a master safety of the multi-track analog tape Masters and to do test edits on prior to cutting the 16 track masters or the stereo mix tapes. Lou and Neil were in the studio with me for the initial mixing week.
Then only two and a half weeks later Neil called again and said we needed to get back into ShangriLa as he had another batch of songs. Preproduction ensued to get the studio booked, gear and crew back and coordinate everyone’s schedule to set up the room for three days. I was already mixing another project for Neil at Village and had to do final set up on a Saturday and we were tracking again on Sunday.
This time he got three more songs that day. We edited and overdubbed some vocals and guitar for another several days and rough mixed those songs. Then back to Village Studios to mix after the Thanksgiving break.
We’ve been at this for a while now and in my humble opinion this is shaping up to be a completely unique and soulfully introspective album of songs that run the gamut from a palette of beautiful acoustic style pastels to in your face loud irreverent rock ‘n roll paint splatter on the canvas in the vein of a Jackson Pollack painting.

| Hi Neil,
Hola Neil. |
| What you do when things don’t go the way you expect them to at all? I have been trying to take my mind off it all, though it is far from easy. Sometimes a little nostalgia can be a good antidote if the present gets a little too overwhelming. So I have been deliberately making my own little journey through the past this last week. Where did the journey take me? Well, those big brown boxes standing on the shelf in the cupboard don’t seem to get opened up too much these days, now that almost everything is available at the click of a mouse on NYA. So with time on my hands, I decided to start on the whole trip from start to finish, beginning with all nine discs from 1963 to 1972, more or less all in one go. And what a trip it's been. I just had to write to say thank you to you and especially to everyone else involved. I know there were so many.
| The first thing that struck me this time round was the sheer volume of attention to minute detail, the work that clearly went into every single element. Looking back 15 or 20 years, I often wondered in those days how it was possible that a project which started in earnest in the late 1980s could seriously be put off each (and every!) year and finally take 20 years to finish. Now I think I truly know.
| It was not just the technical advances in audio reproduction which threw you off track. When you go through Archives Vol. 1 in an ‘orderly fashion’, taking time to look and listen to each and every element chronologically as the story unfolds—the photographs, the films, the feather clips, the Easter eggs, the documents and memorabilia, only then do you get a true impression of the immensity of the work involved and the attention to the minutest detail. The music it contains is only one part of the story, the part that goes through our heads most of the time, and which is now so familiar. But what so impressed me on the trip this time was the artwork, the photography, the videography, the whole multimedia concept, from initial menus all the way through to the trailers and every single stage in between. The hundreds (thousands?) of little graphic elements, the care and skill involved in arranging and shooting all the little cameo videos—it is all just amazingly creative work. I am not sure who was most instrumental in the final result but it was clearly a major team effort. The time and effort taken to put it all together into a finished unity is just awe inspiring. All the little films must have taken months if not years to design, stage set and shoot, even to the point that the pickups on the turntables seem to be playing the records at exactly the right spot to match the song. And the way the lighting is cast onto the tape machine so that it perfectly matches the direction of the light in the photograph behind. Or how the footage for the recordings made in the ranch barn twenty years earlier seems to have been staged in the Barn itself. Masterful art direction. If folks don’t happen to have the Blu-ray or the DVD versions of Volume 1 themselves, they should take a look at the film Live At Massey Hall in Movietone on NYA to get an idea of how the final total multimedia effect was achieved.

| And it is not only the time and the creative skill involved which deservedly earned the Grammy in 2010. Whoever put the money up to get this thing out there finally after 20 years deserves a medal too. I dread to think what it all cost.

| NYA today is such a goldmine, but it is so interesting to see how the multimedia content of Volume 1 on Blu-ray or DVD works organically and in a more complete and fully integrated way. It somehow becomes a kind of “analog” experience! Congratulations and respect to everyone involved, the archivists for the research and information content and the amazing designers. And to you for clearly guiding it all and providing the ‘soundtrack’. A labour of love always takes a long time.

| I also have been thinking about Crazy Horse. To me, that band is a vehicle to cosmic areas that I am unable to traverse with others. Some people have asked why I play with them. They say, “Why do you play with Crazy Horse? They can’t play.” The answer is blowing’ in the wind. I can go places with them. Pegi just recorded “I Don’t Want To Talk About It,” written by Danny Whitten, the original Crazy Horse guitar player and singer who’s all over Early Daze, an album of songs from the beginning of Crazy Horse that I have been working on compiling recently. Danny was every bit the artist that I am, but he died of a heroin OD in the early seventies. Every time I hear Pegi sing that song, it makes me tremendously sad. She sings it so beautifully, phrasing it to break my heart. She does it justice. You can see I have some unfinished business there, rocking with Danny.
Si no saben tocar".
| I have been working on Crazy Horse: The Early Daze for a few months, collecting unreleased tracks that tell a story of the band that no others can tell. Crazy Horse, formed at the beginning of 1969 with myself, Danny Whitten, Ralph Molina, and Billy Talbot, is still together today, in 2011. I love working on this Early Daze Record. It makes me feel good. I told Ralphie, Crazy Horse’s drummer about this and how cool it was. He remembered that there were a lot of things that never saw the light of day. Now they will. He was very excited. I just have to finish it. At least get it on the road to being done. I will have to be hands-on for that.
Me hace sentir bien.
| Danny’s playing is all over those early tracks. I miss him still. He would have grown to be great, and we would have really made history with him. I have some regrets there, but this record will set some of it straight. After Danny’s passing, I was devastated, but I was also booked on the road during the Time Fades Away tour in 1973 with Jack Nitzsche, Kenny Buttrey, Tim Drummond, and Ben Keith. The tour went on. Danny was supposed to play in that band. Only Tim and I are left now.

MY RETURN TO

MI VUELTA A SPOTIFY
12 de marzo de 2024.
| Spotify, the #1 streamer of low res music in the world - Spotify where you get less quality than we made, will now be home of my music again.
| My decision comes as music services Apple and Amazon have started serving the same disinformation podcast features I had opposed at SPOTIFY.
| I cannot just leave Apple and Amazon, like I did Spotify, because my music would have very little streaming outlet to music lovers at all, so I have returned to Spotify, in sincere hopes that Spotify sound quality will improve and people will be able to hear and feel all the music as we made it. Qobuz and Tidal, where my music is presented, are all High res as well.
| I hope all you millions of Spotify users enjoy my songs! They will now all be there for you except for the full sound we created.
| Hopefully Spotify will turn to Hi Res as the answer and serve all the music to everyone. Spotify, you can do it! Really be #1 in all ways. You have the music and the listeners!!!! Start with a limited Hi res tier and build from there!

| I hope this will clear up speculation as to how this Ragged Glory "Smell The Horse" edition was mastered for the new ORS box sets of CDs and more importantly the vinyl. This should also clear up some recording and subsequent mixing workflows that have been talked about on the Steve Hoffman audio forums.

| The flowchart block diagram that was illustrated on his forum page (reprinted below) was very accurate with only a few exceptions. The stage monitor mix in fact did not come from the Record Plant truck at all. It was mixed originally as a setup by Tim Mulligan on the stage on a separate monitor console in the barn and came from a split of the microphones I set up for recording. The other side of the split (direct) went to the truck mic pre-amps which saw several consoles in employment. The UA "Green" board got all the guitar amp mics, the Neve BCM-10 and the API main console got the rest of the microphone inputs as well as some floater Neve 1066 modules were used for the bass guitar and amp. The individual tracks then were routed to the Sony 3324 digital multi-track tape machines.
| The API sidecar was what I derived the running stereo log mix (what I listened to at all times in the truck- also called my "monitor mix", which could have caused some confusion in some of the forum threads as to what got heard on stage in the barn during recording). That same stereo mix from the API sidecar fed the DAT machine as well as the 1/4" Ampex tape machine we used for selected on the spot remixes.

| When David Briggs, Neil and I mixed this album at Indigo Ranch in July of 1990 we employed a hybrid situation for mixing. That being, we captured the analog console stereo buss to two separate places. One, an Apogee first generation two channel A/D converter that then sent the newly encoded digital 44.1k sample rate/16 bit mix to a Sony BVU helical head recorder, and most importantly for this project - also to a 1/4"Ampex ATR analog two track tape machine.
| We spot checked the analog mixes off of the 1/4" every now and then but the 1990 mastered album came from the 44.1k/16b digital for both the CD and later that year or the next – the vinyl as well. One has to remember that vinyl was on its way out the door back in 1990 in favor of the CD format. Vinyl then was an afterthought, at least in rock 'n roll.
| Yes, the multi-track Sony 3324 tape machines were feeding their 24 channel audio through their onboard D/A converters via XLR analog snakes to the Indigo Aengus console inputs but the record was in fact mixed in analog via the console stereo buss and only captured to digital (yet again) and to two track tape. The tape gave us a mix safety at that time in case anything happened to the digital two track master mixes.
| I always had wanted to hear the tape mixes (same exact mix as the digital) as they would ensure that only the multi-tracks were a digital source. If one counts the path of the CD (or vinyl back then) the album would have been from microphone to CD in the format of A/D/A (mixing) to A/D again to the Apogee converter and CD (including vinyl) mastering.
| By utilizing the analog tape mixes instead, the sound only went through one set of A/D converters (the Sony 3324 multi-tracks). Thus it is A/D/A for the new release of this Ragged Glory "Smell The Horse" album on vinyl, and now at a good signal to noise ratio by not fitting all the music on one LP disc but spread across three discs and with the extra songs we recorded then.
| In addition, the Ampex tape machine has a slight low frequency head bump that helps the bottom end and sounds better. Also, the old 1990 vinyl was cut from a digital master whereas this edition is cut from the original analog edited to mirror exactly the original album content!
| This is why Neil always puts the source guide on every record that is part of the NYA re- releases. One always knows what the mastering source is for the vinyl and CDs. In this case it says, “mastered from original analog tapes” and that is the truth. The source guide always indicates the master source, not the multi-track recording format.
| Finally, the songs that were the DAT mixes on the original album had the Record Plant remote truck 1/4" tapes that also got generated at the same time with the truck DAT mixes. Same mix, and that is what i remember. That's my story and i'm sticking to it, but the brain memory does fade with time!

| Age makes it seem the world goes faster. And while slowing it down might be a wonderful hope, the reality is that there is no way to make that happen. No one has any control on how quick time is passing. It's all in the perception, and as any time traveler realizes, perception is all.

| When there is a new Neil Young album, there is an exciting feeling in the air. Life might be flying by, but with the new songs it feels like someone is in control in the way life's shape looks and feels. It is like there is an anticipation for what the music might be, and a thrill that the world could get changed by the songs. It's different from the way most other artists are perceived, because by now Young has carved out his own place in the world of popular music. It's like he's moved to a position all his own, something he's built over the six decades of writing and recording music.

| Almost 30 years ago when I was a publicist at Warner Bros./Reprise Records I started doing press for Neil Young. The long-time crew at Warner Bros., headed by Mo Ostin, were getting ready to move on and those of us at the back of the line-up would be moved up to the front. In many ways it was a sad time at 3300 Warner Blvd. That early crowd had built the label into being the very best in the record business. Through corporate skulduggery and flat-out stupidity, the corporate heavies at the top of the fool chain had decided to usher in new leadership at the long-venerated label. Big mistake, but there was no stopping it.
| The end result was that those of us in the second ranks became in charge of various departments and it was on us to do our best. And we all really tried. As a publicist, I have always believed you can only be as good at what you do as the artists you represent. If you believe in the true power of music, then there is no other road than to try and work with those singers and songwriters with that true power. And lucky for us at our record company, there were many, many artists in that rank.
| And what I quickly learned in starting to work with Neil Young was that he and his near-clairvoyant manager Elliot Roberts had a very distinct and prescient opinion on how publicity operated. And in many ways, it was one that was all their own. Most importantly, there was no need to try and make every album release a major affair. And with so many releases from Young over the years, they took the attitude that not all their albums were created equal. Some were prime time and clearly ready for the big push, while others were ones that could survive on their own and the sheer strength of the music on the disc to carry them forward. It wasn't always a popular practice with the owners of the company, but in Neil Young territory it wasn't really open for discussion.
| I can recall some new releases when it felt like Young knew exactly what he'd created and how it would be received, and he was ready to tell the world about it. It made for some extremely exciting days and nights, with interviewers and TV crews coming and going and the world opening up to some new Neil Young music of the spheres. There is nothing more exciting I have found than being on the train when an incredible new set of songs blasts into the world and there is a reverberating agreement that the music is moving everything into an undeniably new plateau. It was uncanny how tuned into the media the artist was. It was like he had gotten inner signals on how some albums would be righteously received. Of course, no one is right all the time, but Young got close.

Now, on what is being called Neil Young's 42nd album, it feels like it's time again for the klieg lights to come on and the sonic receptors to tune in. WORLD ORDER has the depth and the breadth and, yes, the weight of the world on its side. In a time when it often feels like the future of the planet is being used as a soccer ball, there are ten songs here striving to tell the truth of what is actually happening. And do it in a way that allows for the lessons of love and spirit to maybe even have a say in how things work out. The album carries a gravitas that doesn't so much bring things down. Rather, it seems like the songs are offering a vision on how we got here, and even more powerfully a map on how we might move into a more sustaining effort with the earth and ourselves. WORLD ORDER isn't giving orders, but it sure is opening life up to the feelings that could move humans to a better place. At its most elemental, that's exactly what Neil Young has done.
| The package the discs come in feels like a family album. On the cover is father Scott Young, strikingly dressed and clearly a young man in a hurry. On the inside gatefold is a photo of mother Edna "Rassy" Young with her youngest son in the 1970s. And on two disc sleeves are the older brother and younger sister: Bob Young and Astrid Young. In some ways, it feels like Neil Young is opening up about his family, and sharing their images in ways that really shows the family he has always been a part of. Like maybe now is the time to open that door to familiarity. Along with the photos are the birth dates of not only his family members, but also every single person who worked on MODERN WORLD, as if now is the time we share our humanity and who we are. Who knows? Maybe that is the way to offer a small beginning to breaking down the barriers that separate us, and if not now when is the time to start that process.

| In the end, these songs all carry such a wide-open feeling of exactly where Neil Young is now, and also strong overtones of where he came from and how he got it. As if maybe as we all approach wherever each of our trails is leading, it's a wonderful moment in the world's history to open up to ideas and spiritual elements that allow a rebirth in ways that are rarely imagined.

| The first song, "LOVE EARTH," says it all: "Love Earth / there's really nothing better to give / love Earth / and your love comes back to you..." Surely that is one of the strongest and most straightforward ideas Neil Young has ever written. It says it all. / Y tu amor volverá a ti...". |

| Crazy Horse (Billy Talbot/bass, Ralph Molina/drums and Nils Lofgren/guitar, piano, accordion, with all on backing vocals) has become the band of bands. Together over 50 years, they have progressed into the musical twilight zone of telepathy where words are not needed between them and the one-mind concept guides the group into musical worlds that cannot really be explained but must be heard. As WORLD RECORD begins to take off for a sonic journey there is a feeling of deep anticipation that what is ahead will include revelations and surprises, much like the rides at a county fair. Rather than normal progressions, these will be songs that come from a deeper zone, one where Young has discovered anew.

| The second track, "OVERHEAD," states that fact as vividly as it can: "It's my life / it's my love / it's my day..." It is love in its highest elevation, both physically and emotionally, and finding it now, in 2022, is the gift of a lifetime. |

| Fighting for what needs to be fought for has been the story of the world since its beginning. "I WALK WITH YOU (earth ringtones)" steps right into that dilemma of trying to understand the place for strife and suffering in life, knowing that it has always been there and very well could always be. But it doesn't need to stop there. There are places to move on to, and that is the human struggle. Or as Young sings, "It's the price of life..." |

| "THIS OLD PLANET (changing days)" invokes the days of youth when things seemed simpler, and options were open. But, really, that's the way it is for the young. It's the gift that's given that feels like it will last forever until life takes us through the years. And not until then the lights of reality shine through and we all end up so much nearer the end of the beginning does that curtain open up on the last act. Of course, the only response is to repel the fear and hope for the future for all those who will be here after us. The changing days are changing for all of us, and some have more to be here for than others. But that is truly the equation of life and the changing days are still the same. For all of us. |

| Halfway in WORLD RECORD and it's time for the big reality check on "THE WORLD (is in trouble now)." Neil Young has had such a close personal relationship with the earth his whole life that when he sees the harsher side of the shape it's in now it comes as a heavy blow. One that cannot be ignored. The trouble has been growing, and it's not turning back. Nor will he. As he sings, "Because the world has held me so / I never will let go..." We are all, whether consciously or not, warriors for earth. That is the only way mass survival will work. The great reckoning that will surely come is not a threat, but more like a promise. A promise that can be kept. That is our survival. | Estamos a mitad de WORLD RECORD y es hora del gran golpe de realidad de "THE WORLD (is in trouble now)". |

| And that survival comes in "BREAK THE CHAIN." The call has been given and prospects are clear. The chains of our lives that must be broken comes when Young sings "I'm gonna love every breath that I take..." And then Crazy Horse shifts into overdrive and hot rods it into tomorrow, knowing that this is no idle threat. Some chains must be broken, and these are the ones. | Y esa supervivencia llega en " BREAK THE CHAIN". |

| Nearing the end of WORLD RECORD has the feeling of an opening and closing of life. The back-and-forth of positivity and negativity are locked in battle, and the only way to get through to the higher side is through songs like "THE LONG DAY BEFORE." The daily news cannot always be believed, and the ideas and beliefs that will help pave a new road to survival are being covered up daily. The booklet lyrics shift to italics to make sure the message in plain sight is not missed: "In the long days before to / the nights of the morning after it / will live on as a memory of fate..." |

| Once again, hope sings eternal on "WALKIN' ON THE ROAD (to the future)" where the past is owned up to and a new resolve to move forward beyond war is given. Sometimes the equation of life is not about doing the right thing but doing the only thing that will bring salvation. There is no alternative. The children of the future hang in the balance, and the lyric sleeve shifts to all caps: "NO MORE WAR / ONLY LOVE..." Young has taken the express train to the end of the line and shown his hand. This is the whole deal. |

| And after such an enthralling wandering around the Earth and the closer edges of the cosmos, what is the final truth? Listeners must know. "THE WONDER WON'T WAIT," of course. Neil Young sums it up as succinctly as anyone ever has in song: "Take some time to live before you die / 'cause the wonder won't wait / No the wonder won't wait..." Then the Earth answers: "I'm the Earth and I wanna live / The wonder won't wait / for me...to swing at the stars in the sky." And, finally, the first disc ends like the words on the little paper in a Chinese fortune cookie: "Take some time to live / before you die / 'Cause the wonder won't wait / No the wonder won't wait for you / to stand outside yourself." We all live inside ourselves, and spend our days trying to connect with what is outside us. The obvious arrives just in time: it is all one, inside and outside, and the connection is already there, but broken. It is time to reconnect. "THE WONDER WON'T WAIT", por supuesto. |
