THE VINYL STORY

La historia del vinilo

10-21-21

In the following New York Times article about vinyl, the telling part is what’s missing. There is no talk about the quality of Vinyl. Vinyl is simply the best way to hear all the music if the vinyl you buy is made from analog masters. However, if the vinyl is made from a CD or digital master, it will have zero quality advantage over CDs or digital. Zero.

Cero.
I love vinyl because it sounds best. Analog recording is a reflection. Digital recording is a reconstitution. Compare a universe of sound to bits and pieces of it. There is no comparison. Quality is analog sound reproduced on vinyl. I am a big supporter of hi-res digital because it is the best digital, with the most depth of sound for the medium. It is not analog and does not sound as good.

Today’s technology for reproducing music is a misguided mess getting worse with every passing format. The original recordings made by great artists, when applied to the new surround technology from Apple, Dolby and AMAZON, will miss the mark completely. I say this because it is not created by the original makers, not using the blends the artists made in their mixes. The music is all remixed with digital gizmos by engineers doing a job for the record companies so the music can be heard in the new technology. This completely misses the mark of capturing the original. The creators are not in the room. The echo is not the same. The eq is not the same. The nuances are not there. The balances, replaced by engineers doing a job, will never be as great as they could be if the original was captured, mastered, and otherwise left unaltered.

If new recordings use the surround medium, they have a chance of being created by the music makers and may be great. That will be the future of records if Apple has a say. First, Apple has to do what has already been done by Dolby. But they have to do it again so that it will only be played back correctly on Apple products. A false superiority at the expense of the art.

I have seen the future of my music and it is not pretty. Today we work tirelessly to bring you the best. To hear it, get a good vinyl set up and make sure the records are original - not from digital copies.

Our new Crazy Horse record - ‘Barn’, is made in the old way and will sound amazing!

In my opinion, our hi-res and other digital copies of ‘Barn’ will sound as good as the medium can, but not as good as our original analog recordings.

Here is the new article about vinyl from the New York Times:

Left for dead in the 1980s, vinyl records are now the music industry’s most popular and highest-grossing physical format. Getting them manufactured, however, is increasingly a challenge.

Oct. 21, 2021, 5:00 a.m. ET Within the Indianapolis office of Joyful Noise Recordings, a specialty label that caters to vinyl-loving fans of underground rock, is a corner that employees call the “lathe cave.”

There sits a Presto 6N record lathe — a 1940s-vintage machine the size of a microwave that makes records by cutting a groove into a blank vinyl platter. Unlike most standard records, which are pressed by the hundreds or thousands, each lathe-cut disc must be created individually. “It’s incredibly laborious,” said Karl Hofstetter, the label’s founder. “If a song is three minutes long, it takes three minutes to make every one.”

This ancient technology — scuffed and dinged, the lathe looks like something from a World War II submarine — is a key part of Joyful Noise’s strategy to survive the very surge of vinyl popularity the label has helped fuel. Left for dead with the advent of CDs in the 1980s, vinyl records are now the music industry’s most popular and highest-grossing physical format, with fans choosing it for collectibility, sound quality or simply the tactile experience of music in an age of digital ephemerality. After growing steadily for more than a decade, LP sales exploded during the pandemic.

In the first six months of this year, 17 million vinyl records were sold in the United States, generating $467 million in retail revenue, nearly double the amount from the same period in 2020, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Sixteen million CDs were also sold in the first half of 2021, worth just $205 million. Physical recordings are now just a sliver of the overall music business — streaming is 84 percent of domestic revenue — but they can be a strong indication of fan loyalty, and stars like Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo make vinyl an important part of their marketing.

Yet there are worrying signs that the vinyl bonanza has exceeded the industrial capacity needed to sustain it. Production logjams and a reliance on balky, decades-old pressing machines have led to what executives say are unprecedented delays. A couple of years ago, a new record could be turned around in a few months; now it can take up to a year, wreaking havoc on artists’ release plans.

Kevin Morby, a singer-songwriter from Kansas City, Kan., said that his latest LP, “A Night at the Little Los Angeles,” barely arrived in time to sell on his fall tour. And he is one of the lucky ones. Artists from the Beach Boys to Tyler, the Creator have seen their vinyl held up recently.

“It’s almost how I feel about playing live music,” Morby said in an interview. “I now count every show as a success. ‘Wow, we pulled it off — no one got Covid.’ Now I know what it’s like for the world to completely stop. So even if it’s going to be a little late I’m still grateful for that.”

For Joyful Noise, the vinyl crunch has also presented a puzzling problem. Up to 500 V.I.P. customers pay the label $200 a year for special editions of every LP it makes. But the production holdups mean the label cannot predict which titles will be ready during 2022.

“How do we in good conscience sell this for next year,” Hofstetter said, “if we don’t know when these records will show up?”

The label’s solution is to make lathe-cut singles for each of the eight albums it intends to release next year, as placeholder bonuses while its customers wait. Doing so will cost Joyful Noise money and time — Hofstetter groaned as we calculated that eight records with five minutes of music per side, cut 500 times each, would take 666 hours of lathe work — but the label sees it as a necessary investment.

Others are just as frustrated. Thrill Jockey, a Chicago label for indie-rock connoisseurs, wants to celebrate its 30th anniversary next year with a series of reissues, but its founder, Bettina Richards, said she has no idea which titles can be made in time. John Brien of Important Records, which releases work by contemporary composers, recently declared online that “vinyl is dead,” but clarified in an interview that the format is too essential to abandon.

Not even the biggest stars are immune. In an interview this month with BBC Radio, Adele, whose album “30” is due Nov. 19 — and is sure to be a blockbuster on LP — said her release date had been set six months ago to get vinyl and CDs made in time.

“There was like a 25-week lead time!” she exclaimed. “So many CD factories and vinyl factories, they bloody closed down even before Covid because no one bloody prints them anymore.”

Music and manufacturing experts cite a variety of factors behind the holdup. The pandemic shut down many plants for a time, and problems in the global supply chain have slowed the movement of everything from cardboard and polyvinyl chloride — the “vinyl” that records (and plumbing pipes) are made from — to finished albums. In early 2020, a fire destroyed one of only two plants in the world that made lacquer discs, an essential part of the record-making process.

But the bigger issue may be simple supply and demand. Consumption of vinyl LPs has grown much faster than the industry’s ability to make records. The business relies on an aging infrastructure of pressing machines, most of which date to the 1970s or earlier and can be costly to maintain. New machines came along only in recent years, and can cost up to $300,000 each. There’s a backlog of orders for those, too.

Exotic problems pop up that would never interfere with a release on YouTube or SoundCloud. “We had a raccoon infestation,” said Caren Kelleher of Gold Rush Vinyl, a boutique plant in Austin, Texas. “That set us back a week.”

The limits of this infrastructure are being tested as major artists — and super-retailers like Walmart and Amazon — increasingly push vinyl. It is not hard to see why: At a time when CD sales are vanishing and streaming has left artists complaining about minuscule payouts, a new LP, especially if offered in eye-catching colors or in collector-baiting design variants, can sell for $25 or more. As some see it, releases by top pop acts are gumming up the production chain, crowding out the smaller artists and labels that have remained loyal to the format all along.

“What worries me more than anything is that the major labels will dominate and take over all of the capacity, which I don’t think is a good idea,” said Rick Hashimoto of Record Technology Inc., a midsize plant in Camarillo, Calif., that works with many indie labels.

Others say the big labels are just a convenient target. The real problem, they believe, isn’t celebrities jumping on the vinyl bandwagon but that the industrial network simply has not expanded quickly enough to meet growing demand.

“Am I mad that Olivia Rodrigo sold 76,000 vinyl copies of her album?” said Ben Blackwell of Third Man, the record label and vinyl empire that counts Jack White of the White Stripes as one of its founders. “Not at all! This is what I would have dreamed of when we started Third Man — that the biggest frontline artists are all pushing vinyl, and that young kids are into it.

“If someone is mad that that prevents some other title from being pressed,” Blackwell continued, “it feels a little bit elitist and gatekeep-y.”

Still, there are worries that the renaissance may be at risk if further delays frustrate consumers and artists — or if vinyl comes to be treated as just another merchandise item, like T-shirts or key chains, from which fickle fans will simply move on.

Among old-school record types, there have long been suspicions that many new fans buy vinyl for a collectible thrill but never actually drop a needle.

“We noticed during Covid that we got a lot more mail-order complaints like, ‘The jacket has a 10th-of-an-inch bend on the corner,’” said Brian Lowit of Dischord Records, the Washington label behind post-punk icons like Fugazi. “We ask them if the record is playing well and they’ll say, ‘I don’t know, I just keep it in the shrink wrap.’”

For artists, especially ones without major-label backing, sticking with vinyl has now become a question about whether it is worth the trouble.

“Right now vinyl feels legitimizing,” said Cassandra Jenkins, a singer-songwriter in Brooklyn whose last album, “An Overview on Phenomenal Nature,” was a surprise vinyl hit — it started with a pressing of 300 copies and eventually went to 7,000.

“It’s an investment for an artist,” she added. “I want these objects that I can sell, so I am going to invest in that.”

For some musicians like Jenkins, that investment has now begun to affect the creative process. After the release of her last album, in February, she began working on follow-up material. But the long turnaround time for vinyl meant she had to get started immediately, with a tight deadline, to get her music in the manufacturing pipeline.

In Jenkins’s case, the pressure had a positive effect. She recorded an EP of new material, due by the end of the year on vinyl only. Another release, “(An Overview on) An Overview on Phenomenal Nature,” with outtakes and a new track, will come out on CD and digital formats next month — with vinyl to follow in April.

“It oddly pushed me into making more music than I would have had we the more luxurious deadlines of yore,” Jenkins said.

And her next project?

¿Y su próximo proyecto?

“This year, it was really important to me to have vinyl,” she said. “Maybe next year it won’t be.”

QUESTION FROM NYA SUBSCRIBER

Neil,
I have a good friend who’s a NYA subscriber and has been asking me for a year to ask you this:
  • “About Time Fades Away and why he buried it for so long. And if he's changed his mind about disliking it given that so many of his fans--me!!!!--adore it"
Joe

NYA: CONSULTA DE UN SUSCRIPTOR

Neil,
  • "¿Por qué has tenido enterrado Time Fades Away (El tiempo se desvanece) tanto tiempo?
Joe.
Joe,
It had a sound issue that drove me nuts and the tour was a stressful one. I eventually got into it when i got far enough away from it.
love
be well
neil

Joe,
(mucho) amor.
(espero que) estés bien.
neil.

Neil
I knew about the sound issue and the unhappy nature of the tour. It's all part of the lore around that album. It's part of the reason I bought up old vinyl of it and bootlegs. We knew he didn't like the album for reasons far beyond the musical content.

Neil,

But the reason why I love that album--and so many of us do--is the bravery of it. He just had the huge commercial hit with Harvest. Any OTHER artist would have made a follow-up album that sounded a lot like Harvest. You know, record company pressure and all. Yet he followed with Time Fades Away. It was so dissonant and different that it took a while to HEAR it. But, man, it was brave. And remember, my introduction to business travel was a cold night stuck in a frigid gasoline station in Buffalo with a busted car and a cassette player and ONLY Harvest to listen to. So I loved Harvest, knew every lick and every word and every beat. But Time Fades Away FORCED you to think beyond that box. It's why it is great.

Sin embargo, sacaste Time Fades Away.

I honestly think that's why so many Neil Young fans from my generation adored him--and I use adore advisedly. Everything he released forced you to think. You bought a Neil Young album on faith. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere was different from After the Gold Rush and that was different from Harvest and Time Fades Away was different from them all. They were ALL amazing, but they were never comfortable or easy. You couldn't assume anything.

Everybody Knows This is Nowhere era diferente de After the Gold Rush y ése era diferente de Harvest... y Time Fades Away era diferente de todos ellos.

Time Fades Away isn't just great music. It's a statement: No boxes. No artificial rules. No records just to sell music. Grow or die. That's what Time Fades Away stands for. It's okay to fail if you try something, but you gotta TRY. That's what Neil Young proved with Time Fades Away. It changed a lot of our lives, even if we didn't understand why back then.

Sorry, didn't mean to get on a soapbox. But that album means so much to me, not just as a Neil Young fan and a music fan, but as a creative person. At a key moment of my life--20 years old, learning the rules of journalism and being told you have talent--there was a guy who said don't be bound by what they tell you. Don't repeat. Grow. Or, as some guy sang once, Don't Be Denied. Even now, 40+ years later, I go to the computer every day and think, don't be denied. What good can you do with your talent to push nouns against verbs today? What good can do without doing something you've done before?

No repitas. Crece.

Time Fades Away is about that for the listener. I get that the creator found it wanting. I get that it was not a good time for him. But for us listeners--those of us who were listening--it was a massive influence ...

Joe.

There is a moment in the film of the 2017 Omemee concert that suddenly made me see the entire Neil Young Archives project in an entirely different light. It happens early on, three songs in, when Neil sits down to the piano to play “Journey Through the Past,” with its refrain: “Will I still be in your eyes and on your mind.” The camera closes in on the piano; and when it pulls back, it’s January 19, 1971, and a twenty-five-year old Neil Young, hunched behind a curtain of hair, is playing the same song, solo in Massey Hall, Toronto. There is something uncanny about the moment, a sense of the past not so much haunting the present, as inhabiting it. It’s like seeing a very tangible ghost.

I think that we can understand the uncanniness of this moment in terms of some of the great works of literature and theatre of the past century. For instance, there is a famous moment early in Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past (1913-1927), when the taste of a particular biscuit – a madeleine – triggers a series of involuntary memories that weave through the rest of novel's seven volumes. The taste of the biscuit is real in the present; but it also belongs to the past, and for that moment, past and present exist together, creating a kind of explosion of memory. As T.S. Eliot writes in the poem “Burnt Norton” (1935): “Time present and time past/ Are both perhaps present in time future,/ And time future contained in time past.”

This may sound like a complex philosophical idea, but we experience it every time we listen to a recording. Unlike live sound, which exists fully in the present (it’s not just presence, it’s present), recorded sound always belongs partly to the past in which was recorded. However, when we play the recording, the sound recorded all those years ago becomes part of the present in which we hear it; in a very real sense, at such moments, the past haunts the present. This is true of all recordings, but usually we just ignore the ghosts, and simply listen to the music.

However, every so often, we’re reminded of the uncanniness of listening to a recorded voice. For instance, Samuel Beckett wrote his play Krapp’s Last Tape in 1958, the year after Les Paul bought his first Ampex 8-track recorder, and effectively pioneered multi-track recording. In Krapp’s Last Tape, the elderly Krapp, on “a late evening in the future”, sits listening to a series of reel-to-reel recordings of his voice that he has made on his birthday every year since he was a young man. “Just been listening to that stupid bastard I took myself for thirty years ago”. For the audience, both the elderly Krapp, live before us on the stage, and the young Krapp we hear on the tape, are both equally present, even though one barely recognises the other any longer. The result is one of the great plays about what it means to experience time passing and time that has passed.

We need to begin to start thinking about the Neil Young Archive in these terms. The NYA is not simply like a very large Spotify playlist with better sound; and listening to a song on the Archive is not the same as listening to that same song in any other format. The whole architecture of the site, from the filing cabinet interface with its year index, to the vintage controls and archival documents, reminds us of that uncanny feature of recorded music that we usually hide from ourselves: that when we listen to a recording, we are conjuring a ghost. This is not new territory for Neil: “Journey Through the Past”, “Helpless”, “Comes a Time”, and “Time Fades Away” are all songs about memory and time passing – and that is only to pick the most obvious examples. However, the NYA is bigger than any one song; it is also more than the sum of all of the many songs it contains. In the NYA, we have the unprecedented combination of an artist who has long been fascinated with memory, but who, unlike most of the rest of us, has been making recordings of his past (with a scrupulous attention to sound quality) for more than half a century; and who now has the technology, in the digital archive, to give structure and form these layers of recorded memories. This is arguably what much of the most compelling art has always done – it has given structure and form to time and memory. But now we have a new kind of art form, the digital archive, in which we can begin to experience and explore the old questions in new ways. The NYA is the pioneering example of this new art form.

Goin' To GREENDALE

Destino: GREENDALE

When you've been on the music trail long enough, it's tempting to look back and see a few landmarks that really lit the way forward, and hold them as tight as you can. Some stand in stark relief, casting such a mighty glow they can't be missed. Certain concerts (for me James Brown in 1963; The Everly Brothers in ''64; The Rolling Stones in '65; Bobby "Blue" Bland in '65; Otis Redding in '66; 13th Floor Elevators in '66; Jimi Hendrix in '67; Grateful Dead in '68; Muddy Waters in '68, Janis Joplin in '69; CSNY in '70, Van Morrison in '72 and all the way to today) remain vivid right in front of my eyes, counting into the hundreds so life now seems like one long concert, replayed over and over bringing waves of joy and the realization that the world is a joyous surprise as long as your heart and soul stay open. I started writing about music, feebly at first, for my college newspaper in Georgetown, Texas in 1970. I never had a clue what I was doing--and still don't. Rather I find what I love and do my best to share some of the feelings and insights the music brings.

I've had a circuitous career in this half-century pursuit. From a mediocre drummer to newspaper journalist, record store clerk, disc jockey, newspaper editor, record label publicist, concert promoter, record producer, A&R director and book author: the trick I discovered is to never look back or try to plot a course forward. Just keep moving. Along the way I also worked as a hospital orderly, short-order cook, newspaper typesetter and Deputy Constable. I never had a resume or even applied for a job. The phone rang, I answered and off I went. What kept me going through it all was a profound love of music, and the realization that without it I was a goner. The sounds that took over my life no doubt also saved it. I do know I can never repay all that music has given me. Because it has been everything.

Along the way I became a publicist at Warner Bros./Reprise Records, and one of the artists I represented was Neil Young. All bets were off in that endeavor. It was a daily surprise what came next, some projects being super successful and some flying below the radar. The lesson I learned was that sales figures weren't the Holy Grail. What really counted was how excited Young--and hopefully those of us working with him--were. With his ever-dedicated manager, the late Elliot Roberts directing visions and traffic, every day was a surprise. Life became a land where the rules were erased and the only error to be made was to think normally. That would not do. The artist and the music he made set the pace, and our job was to keep up. What a thrill.

In the early 2000s word got back to the record label Young "had an idea." And that, dear listeners, is when the bells start ringing, the lights start flashing and the thrillometer heats up all the way to the top of the tube. Young had written an album's worth of songs telling a story in some ways like Mark Twain told his. There were recurring characters in the songs, acting out the always changing vagaries of life in a small town with an eye towards how America was becoming more confusing by the minute. The country's values were breaking down and what was replacing society's ruble was anyone's guess. Big Media was fast becoming a new religion and heaven help those who got in its way. Naturally, Neil Young wanted to present the ten songs on the new album GREENDALE in a 360-degree concert along the lines of a live drama as he and Crazy Horse performed the songs.

Manager Roberts suggested I might want to come to an early rehearsal, so off I went to Mountain View, California where rehearsals were happening at Shoreline Amphitheatre, known as the North California home of the Grateful Dead and the Bridge School Concerts, among so many other shows. Walking into the venue one afternoon I noticed it was totally empty. Except for stage crew and musicians, there wasn't a single soul in the audience. I walked around backstage for awhile until I ran into the project's resident artist, the extremely talented James Mazzeo, who was in his trailer drawing, painting and smoking some incredibly potent pot. Sharing some with me, though I hadn't smoked in 20 years, sent me off on the Alice in Wonderland Express.

I quickly realized I was in way over my head when I forgot my name, why I had come to Shoreline and where I had left my car. But I'd been to that psychic place before and knew time was my hero and I would eventually remember those details if I stayed close to the ground. So I did what any impaired person would do: I started wandering around looking for signposts. In one backstage area I saw Pegi Young and their dog Carl come out of a trailer, and happily walked up to her, who I had never met. I put my hand out and loudly announced, "Hi, I'm Pegi Young." She immediately gave me a quizzical look and kindly said, "No, I'm Pegi Young and I'm glad to meet you. What's your name?" Busted. But game on and she saw I needed some direction so led me over to the absolutely empty 8,000 Shoreline seats and suggested I find one and sit down.

As I walked into the area Young, onstage roarin' with Crazy Horse, gave me a nod and, I seem to recall, and chuckled as he saw my diminished ability to find a seat though every one of them was empty. I appreciated his understanding and, in my semi-paranoid state, thought he'd probably been in that mindset before. As the songs came alive that day, I was convinced I had seen the future of rock & roll and its name was GREENDALE. When the band and actors were finished, I also was convinced I had to sit in my seat for a few hours and come down from my highly altered state before I could find my car and drive back to the San Jose airport to fly back to Burbank. That was a close one, but I eventually made it home. No more pot for me.

That rehearsal at Shoreline, though, was when the bus came by and I got on for the trip to never never land. For the next four hours as the band and some of the crew/actors ran through the ropes of GREENDALE, I was speechless. I watched and beamed as what would come to be one of the musical highlights of my life in music came alive. Soon, when the album was out and the concert tour had started, I went to New York to see GREENDALE in all its glory. It was playing a sold-out multi-night run at Radio City Music Hall. Not a bad place to park the imagination. GREENDALE really was unlike any so-called rock & roll show I'd ever seen, because it was so much beyond what there'd ever been. It was a fantasmical creation of real life told from the inside out.

With dramatic twists and turns and a series of songs that took the listener on a mad-hatter's run on reality, all the while staying grounded in the down home center of the earth, there really wasn't any way to explain it. As a publicist I would fumble with words talking to writers about the music and concert, and in the end the best I could do was implore those in the media to go see it live. As these things and so much else goes, some got it and some didn't. Which is okay. One of the best lessons I learned in the music business is that no one agrees on everything and to respect others' opinions, whether I thought they were right or wrong. It's best to play the long game and know that what goes around comes around and there's always another day to thrive. But it's true that those who got GREENDALE really got it. That I know.

Me consta.

Which brings us to 2020, 17 years since GREENDALE's original appearance, and that new day is here again. This time there is a brand new film, which includes a complete filmed GREENDALE performance from 2003 in Toronto, woven into some of the original footage released when the first GREENDALE film came out. And it just so happens that that Toronto show is an over-the-top celebration of everything that music can be. It opens the windows on so much of the darkness of the past few years, pointing a time-tested way out of the troubling present: action. Neil Young screened the new GREENDALE film recently at the ultra high fidelity Cary Grant Theatre on the Sony movie lot, and there was such a breathtaking aura in the room that it was like everything we'd always hoped for from music had come alive once more.

When Young and Crazy Horse got to the lyrics in the first song "Falling From Above," that go, "Sing a song for freedom sing a song for love / sing a song for depressed angels falling from above," such strong emotions went through the movie audience it was like a silent cheer moved through the room. Soon after that Young sang, "A little love and affection in everything you do / will make the world a better place with or without you," and the deal was sealed. We were all taking a trip once again to Greendale, and no matter all the years from when we'd first been there, everything felt brand new. I leaned over to Neil Young, who just happened to be sitting next to me, and said, "This music makes me want to be a better person." It was like my mind had swollen with a commitment to the future where the human race turns a corner towards the good, and all these years of music supplying the soundtrack for that quest came to a shining point. I had to tell someone, and it was Neil Young. Why not?

Poco después, Young cantó: "A little love and affection in everything you do / will make the world a better place with or without you" (Un poco de amor y afecto en todo lo que haces / hará del mundo un lugar mejor con o sin ti), y el trato quedó sellado.

As the songs and the plot continued to unfold, the electricity of that Toronto live performance we were watching drew the whole movie audience into the mythical land of GREENDALE, and it felt absolutely real. It's the magic of creativity backed by belief that took us there--again--and made us care. In the song "Bandit," Young offers a steel rod of hope: "Someday you'll find everything you're looking for." There is no doubt after hearing the song that hope is the greatest gift any of us can share. That's what these songs are: bridges of hope through it all. We surely need it more today than ever.

The last song in GREENDALE is "Be the Rain," and on that stage in Toronto years ago at least 50 people joined Neil Young and Crazy Horse in a tribal stomp of courage, a prophesy to where we are now in the ticking clock to save the planet. It's a gathering of the young and the old, the past and the future, and when their hallelujah chorus rises at the end of the song to "Save the planet for another day / be the rain be the rain," there is no other choice. That time is here, and there can be no turning back. Neil Young has taken us there because he cares. And he's not going away.

Neil Young mostly recorded his first masterpiece, 1970’s After the Gold Rush, in his Topanga Canyon basement, and nearly 50 years later, his monument to his life is being honed in a garage office in Pasadena.

This quirky project, the Neil Young Archives, cost “well over a million dollars” out of pocket, his late manager, Elliot Roberts, estimated last year. Earthy and tactile yet slightly surreal, it looks like an early computer game à la Myst. Most importantly—as Young is fond of saying—it “sounds like God.”

“Some people get right into it and others find it a little challenging the first couple of times,” Young’s technology assistant, Phil Baker, admits to Fortune. “But it’s all Neil. It’s his vision.” (Young was not available to comment for this piece.)

The archives began as a physical release series in 1989 and launched as a free website in 2017, before pivoting to a subscription service in 2019. The site contains Young’s entire catalog—from his 1963 single as part of the Squires, “Aurora,” to his 2019 album with Crazy Horse, Colorado—in the highest bit rate your system can handle. Soon, Young promises, his long-shelved 1975 album Homegrown will be revealed.

“I should have shared it. It’s actually beautiful,” he said about Homegrown in a post last month.

Like everything else on NYA, Homegrown will be streamable in the highest audio resolution your system can handle. This has been a long time coming—decades, even. In their 2019 memoir To Feel the Music, Young and Baker tell the story of how they’ve been trying to save high-resolution audio for years.

“High resolution = fine screen,” Young writes in the book. “Low resolution = chicken wire.”

The seeds were planted in 1989

Las semillas se plantaron en 1989

The first Neil Young Archives release was a truncated 1970 show with Crazy Horse, 2006’s Live at the Fillmore East. Three years later, a much more expansive boxed set arrived: Archives, Vol. 1 (1963–1972), 10 Blu-rays, a DVD, and a CD that had been 20 years in the making.

Even Young found Archives, Vol. 1 cumbersome. “Those who got it went, ‘Holy shit, what is this thing? This is insane,’” he wrote in To Feel the Music. (At press time, a factory-sealed copy is hanging out on eBay for $995.95.)

Since then, Young has steadily put out Archives releases physically (the last few 1970s-era live albums: 2018’s Roxy: Tonight’s the Night Live and Songs for Judy, and 2019’s Tuscaloosa.) But he’s always been unhappy with the limited audio quality of CDs, MP3s, and Spotify. Seven years ago, he tried to fix the problem himself.

The rise and fall of Pono

Ascenso y caída de Pono

In 2012, Young told his label, Warner Music Group, that he wanted to create a high-resolution music player and download service, using a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) system to restore the luster of good vinyl.

Despite preferring high-resolution music on his own time, Steve Jobs wouldn’t integrate it into Apple devices, citing a lack of demand. Young felt this was harmful to music and began publicly calling the audio “compromised.” “You’ve got to believe that if he’d lived long enough, he’d do what I’m trying to do,” Young said soon after Jobs’ death. (In life, Jobs was furious about Young’s anti-Apple crusade: “Fuck Neil Young, and fuck his records.”)

Young wanted his music player to support 24-bit, 192 kHz files, which is leaps and bounds beyond CD quality (16-bit, 44.1 kHz)—and to some naysayers, too high quality, surpassing what the ear is capable of hearing. But as Baker lays out in To Feel the Music, the pair have basic scientific truth on their side—by its nature, an analog master contains more information than a lossy digital file.

To get his idea off the ground, Young recruited entrepreneur Mark Goldstein, software engineer Jason Rubenstein, and industrial designer Mike Nuttall. He also called up Baker, a veteran hardware developer who worked for everyone from Atari to Polaroid, designed gadgets like Apple’s PowerBook 1400 and the Stowaway folding keyboard, and wrote From Concept to Consumer, a 2008 book on how to develop products and bring them to market.

“It seemed quite interesting to me,” Baker wrote in To Feel the Music. “Of course, anything would seem interesting when it might involve working with Neil Young.”

"Me pareció muy interesante", escribe Baker en To Feel the Music.

Young has always been a techie at heart, captivated by classic cars and cutting-edge gadgets. In 1990 he began kicking around an idea called “DiscoChron—The Chronology of Music,” a “visual way to look at music in the context of time” that looks and works like a pinball machine. Four years later, Young cocreated Trainmaster Command Control, a mobile electronic system for model railroads, and made a website about his hobby under the name “Clyde Coil.” One section, the Hi-Rail Times, is a silly faux-newspaper sloganed “All the news that’s rail.”

Pono was his more high-profile—and high-stakes—concept to date, but it had a rough ride from design to shipment.

As Young’s recording and touring schedule took him away from his corporate duties, Pono’s company, PonoMusic, cycled through prospective CEOs, eventually finding its man in Silicon Valley investor John Hamm in 2013. Company partner Bob Stuart of Meridian Audio never delivered promised memory-saving software, according to Baker, leaving the team in the lurch.

Pono also needed to build an online storefront from the ground up—fast. (Baker compared this to “creating iTunes in six months.”) Despite a successful Kickstarter campaign and early enthusiasm from users, some of the reviews were less than kind.

Ars Technica called it “a tall, refreshing drink of snake oil.”

“Buying a Pono means paying for sounds you’ll never hear,” Slate claimed in 2015.

In May 2016, as outlined in To Feel the Music, the back end of the Pono store, Omniphone, filed for bankruptcy—and a month later, Apple bought it up and ordered it to shut down all operations. In December 2017, Pono shut down.

“I may end up going to my grave and be banging my head against my gravestone trying to get somebody to understand about what’s happening to music!” Young wrote in To Feel the Music.

Young relents on streaming

Young acepta la transmisión en continuo

All through PonoMusic’s ups and downs, former board member Gigi Brisson had suggested a pivot to streaming. At the time, Young wouldn’t budge, a decision he later regretted.

“That was one of my biggest mistakes, not listening to Gigi,” he wrote in To Feel the Music. “She was not limited by her technical knowledge and recognized that high-res streaming would be of huge value…I was blind to that.”

During Pono’s tailspin, one of its software engineers, Kevin Fielding, bent Young’s ear about Orastream, a Singaporean high-res audio service that pioneered adaptive streaming, which detects the limitations of the listener’s audio system and sends the highest possible bitrate.

Young invested out of pocket to keep Orastream going and worked with its engineers to make alterations, calling the new version XStream. (Later, he renamed it “XStream by NYA,” inspired by Beats by Dr. Dre.) While banging his head against the wall trying to drum up XStream interest from executives, Young had an epiphany.

“Why not use it on just my own music to show that it could be done?” he wrote in To Feel the Music. “High resolution could be streamed, and I could prove it on my own turf, with my own music.”

The Neil Young Archives website is born

Nace el sitio web Neil Young Archives

In 2016, Young began developing the Neil Young Archives website with project leader and archivist Hannah Johnson and Toshi Onuki, a Tokyo-based art director.

“I’m responsible for the look and feel of the site and app,” Onuki tells Fortune. “I pretty much touched every single corner of the site.”

Early on, Young asked Onuki to make NYA “(not) look like a website.” Onuki was forced to break basic rules of user interfaces and experiences and saturate the site with graphics. Coated in vivid browns and beiges, the site is the online equivalent of a comfortable leather boot.

“I have to say that Neil’s approach is not conventional,” Onuki says.

Then it all had to work on mobile. “Figuring out how best to represent that information on a small screen, as well as make it intuitive, was very challenging,” Scott Andrew, the founder of New Wave Digital Media, tells Fortune. (He ultimately had to skip the site’s file cabinet visual, info cards, and user playlists for Android and iOS.)

Neil Young Archives was originally programmed by A Different Engine (A.D.E.), a Berkeley-based web application design firm that joined on a “friend of a friend” basis via Onuki. “I just came into work, and that was what I got to do,” A.D.E.’s former engineer, Jason Aeschliman, tells Fortune. “Which was amazing.”

A Different Engine was asked to incorporate anachronistic physical machines, like switches, needle-dials, and a keyhole, and realistic paper and metal textures throughout the UI. There are few images that Young, who was born in 1945, wouldn’t recognize as a child.

“We designed NYA with images of real analog objects I grew up with that I can relate to,” Young wrote in To Feel the Music. “I know it’s a throwback. I am too.”

“But,” he stressed, “the real meat is the sound.

"Pero", recalca, "la chicha es el sonido".

Pull any Young album from the file cabinet, flick a realistic-looking switch between its “320 (kbps)” and “master” settings, and hear the difference for yourself.

Since the 1970s, Young has directed idiosyncratic movies under the name Bernard Shakey. NYA’s Hearse Theater, which plays concert films and documentaries on a schedule, represents this side of him. At press time, the feature presentation is Hometown, a documentary of a Young 2017 solo concert directed by wife Daryl Hannah under the name “dhlovelife”.

A.D.E. programmed the Archives website up to the point of its paywall. “The winds can change quickly on that project,” Mike Ryan, the founder of A.D.E., tells Fortune. “They were expecting fairly low profit from (launching the subscription service), but we got 200,000 sign-ups in the first 48 hours.”

“I think the popularity of it has blown everybody away,” Gordon Smith, the company’s executive producer, tells Fortune. (A Different Engine is no longer involved with Neil Young Archives.)

Today, NYA is run by roughly half a dozen employees who work remotely or in “a couple of offices,” including the Pasadena location, according to Baker.

“We’re focusing on finding the archive material, cataloging it, and putting it onto the website,” Baker says. “It’s just a lot of curation that goes on day-to-day.”

‘A newspaper life’

Una vida de prensa

Perhaps foreshadowed by the Hi-Rail Times, Neil Young Archives sports the NYA Times-Contrarian, a cranky newspaper focusing on music and politics. And, yes, Young usually plugs the copy into the site’s back end himself.

“I know someone that helps him occasionally, but for the most part…” Baker tells Fortune, trailing off with a laugh. “There’s no hierarchy behind it. It’s Neil.”

In his paper, Young keeps fans abreast of new Archives releases, wrings out his environmental anxieties, and writes touching tributes for loved ones, like his ex-wife, Pegi Young, and manager Roberts, who both died in 2019.

Besides, journalism runs in the family: His father, Scott Young, was a prolific Canadian novelist and sportswriter who wrote over 45 books as well as articles for Sports Illustrated, The Saturday Evening Post, The Globe and Mail, and other publications.

“I spend a lot of time on (the Times-Contrarian),” Young writes in To Feel the Music. “Perhaps living my father’s dream of a newspaper life.”

New tiers

Nuevos planes

These days, Young is thinking of putting out everything in the can at once. Last year an anonymous fan wrote a letter to the Times-Contrarian about their “Uncle Eddie,” concerned that the ailing 76-year-old won’t live to hear all of the music.

“He wants to know why you don’t just put all this material out now. Just dump it all out on the NYA website,” they entreated. “He wants you to know that he can’t buy it if he’s dead.”

“That really bums me out,” Young wrote in response. “I have been talking with our team about releasing them all here in 2020.” (This wouldn’t just mean Homegrown, but other shelved solo and Crazy Horse albums, like 1976’s Chrome Dreams, 2000’s Toast, and 2012’s Alchemy.)

“He wants to accelerate the release of a lot of content,” Baker says. “He’s got lots of people working on it in the studio and the archivists working full time.” At press time, they’re thinking of creating a special “Uncle Eddie” tier, or boiling everything into one tier for a slightly higher price.

A ripple effect

Un efecto dominó

In the long run, Young wants the Archives to be more than a curiosity shop, a memory box, a time capsule. Eventually, he sees the whole planet as preserving its music like this.

“Sometimes I imagine NYA as the first step to a World Music Archives,” he wrote in To Feel the Music. “WMA Universal, WMA Warner Brothers, WMA Sony, WMA Blue Note, WMA Vanguard, WMA Folkways, each with their own little place…wouldn’t that be nice?”

"A veces me imagino a NYA como el primer paso hacia un Archivo Mundial de Música (World Music Archives - WMA)", escribe en To Feel the Music. "WMA Universal, WMA Warner Brothers, WMA Sony, WMA Blue Note, WMA Vanguard, WMA Folkways, cada uno con su propio rinconcito... ¿no sería bonito?".

In the now, the music industry is quietly catching up with Young.

“He’s been influencing the streaming world,” Dan Hesse, the former CEO of Sprint who’s credited as a “sage” on the NYA site, tells Fortune. “Tidal came out with a higher resolution—still not high resolution—but higher. Then Qobuz came out with even higher still. And then the big gorilla, Amazon, came out with high-definition streaming music.” (Young appeared in an ad for Amazon Music HD in 2019.)

Shouldn’t “the big gorilla” and its ilk be seen as competitors? “Neil doesn’t think so,” Hesse says. “Neil couldn’t be more thrilled to see the ‘competitors’ bring the music to everybody. That’s why he’s doing it.”

“He was way ahead of the curve, spreading the gospel, the good news about 24-bit audio,” Dan Mackta, the managing director of Qobuz, tells Fortune. “Neil Young Archives is the realization of his dream. All he can do is put together the ultimate service with what he controls.”

“He’s demonstrating with the Archives that you can stream high-res,” Hesse says.

In “Driftin’ Back,” a 27-minute jam with Crazy Horse from 2012’s Psychedelic Pill, Young addresses how bad resolution affects his art. “When you hear my song now, you only get 5%,” he sings.

“You used to get it all!” he continues. “You used to get it all!”

"¡Antes lo tenías todo!", continúa. "¡Antes lo tenías todo!".

But at the dawn of a new decade, Young fans are finally “getting it all”—and then some. Run your credit card, rifle through some yellowing documents, and crank a good set of headphones—and you’ll grasp the essence of a true giant.
